Kadhayil Alpam Karyam

A part of the profits of Folksnfables is set aside to conduct storytelling and art workshops in government homes for underprivileged children in Kerala, India. This is done in collaboration with the Women and Child Care department, Kerala, India.

The idea is to design innovative educational paths through which children are encouraged to read. This will improve their imaginative and creative capacities and help in their overall development. Our project called Kadhayil Alpam Karyam (KAK) is in the pilot phase where we conduct workshops regularly in a selected children’s home. This is a non-profit project and we have assembled a dedicated set of volunteers coming from different walks of life along with renowned children’s book authors, storytellers, educators, academicians and child psychologists.
Interacting with children in our workshops has helped us understand better how they think and this in turn helps Folksnfables to design the world in the imaginations of children which they can best relate to. In the future, we want upscale this program (KAK) to other children’s homes and schools in other parts of India and rest of the world.

How it began?
In many countries like India there is a huge inequality when it comes to ensuring quality education to all children. Our vision was to address a shortfall of leadership in this area. Being part of the children’s books industry, we aimed to democratize access to books so that every child could read and make use of the opportunities that reading provides. We began by gifting books to a children’s home on which nearly 100 underprivileged children were dependent. Our responsibility did not end there and we went back only to see that the books were underused. We realized we had to find creative solutions that will encourage reading habits in children. This was the motivation behind KAK.
